For example, social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr together with e-commerce sites such as Amazon and eBay make available, through web services, the same data and functionality available through traditional websites. Indeed, it is rare nowadays to develop a website that is not paired with a web service.

A. 1. Traditional programming skills used to create Java-based websites using the JSP/ HttpServlet APIs transfer nicely to REST-style web services. The publication of a Java-based web service is essentially the same as that for a Java-based website (for example, a web server such as Tomcat or Jetty can be used for either).

2. Despite the growing popularity of REST-style services, SOAP-based services delivered over HTTP/HTTPS remain a programmer-friendly variant of REST-style services; and SOAP-based clients are typically easier to write than REST-style ones.

3. Programming a web service and then publishing it are nicely separated concerns: In general, how the service is programmed (for instance, the APIs used) has little or no impact on how the service is published (for instance, with a command-line publisher, a commercial-grade web server such as Tomcat, or a full-blown Java Application Server such as GlassFish or JBoss).

4. jQuery and other JavaScript dialects make it increasingly easy to embed web-service clients within HTML pages.

5. Securing a web service is essentially the same as securing a web site.

About the Author

Martin Kalin has a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and is a professor in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University. He has co-written a series of books on C and C++ and written a book on Java for programmers. He enjoys commercial programming and has co-developed large distributed systems in process scheduling and product configuration.

A code centric tour of Java Web Service APIs

The book describes itself as "a code centric tour through the APIs and implementation technologies that support web services under Java."

Key words being "code centric" and "tour".

What you get:

++ Lots of examples using key Java web service technologies.
....Service development examples using plain vanilla servlets, REST with JAX-RS/Restlets/JAX-WS, and SOAP with JAX-WS.
....Service deployment examples using a servlet container or an Endpoint publisher.
....Client development examples using plain Java (URLConnection), WADL generated classes, etc.
....Tooling such as xjc, wsimport, schemagen, wadl2java, etc.

However, here's what is missed:

-- Not enough detail on supporting technologies such as JAXB, XML parsing, XML Schemas, etc.
-- Focuses heavily on Amazon's E-commerce API, which is too complex to make for readable examples in a short book. (This complexity is acknowledged in the section on async clients.)
-- The focus is on implementation, not design. So, no discussion of REST principles, good API design, etc.

Note that a significant complaint with the first edition was poorly written code examples. While I have not executed the code, all the snippets looked reasonable to me. However, the ZIP archives I downloaded from the O'Reilly site (points to github.com/mkalin/jwsur2) could not be opened using WinZip 12.

The emphasis of this book is on coding services and clients. As a result, it avoids high level concepts, best practices, and provides only summary level discussions of other adjacent APIs.

This single minded focus may not be for everyone. However, I found it rather refreshing as there are enough high brow, but useless, books out there.

Good book only if you want to see the variety of possible WS implementatons

Instead of concentrating on a way to build efficient WS with standard Java Technologies this book tries to touch every possible way to create a web service with standard and non-standard technologies.

I would recommend concentrating more on Java EE and ways to build highly efficient web services with the standard technologies instead of exploring Restlet.

Just enough information to get you up and running

I have been a Java programmer for many years. Right now I have a project that requires me to implement a Java web service. I have a very minimal understanding on both RESTful and SOAP-based web services prior reading this book so this book is really my first book that I used to help me to gain more understanding on Java web services.

Here's my thoughts on this book.

- This book assumes you know some Java and object oriented programming since various Java technologies that enables RESTful web services and SOAP-based services use various OO techniques.

- If you have some understanding (even a little) on XML, JSON, HTTP(S), RESTful and SOAP then you will find this book much easier to understand and enjoyable.

- I think this book is written at a high level to get you up and running quickly with Java Web Services, it covers just enough so you can start working therefore chances are after reading this book you will still need to find some additional materials to dive into the ins and outs of whatever Java Web Service type you plan to implement. Since this book already provided you with the fundamental background so now you just need to read upon specific topics that you need.

- The example code does work but requires very minor modification. For example the shipped build.xml needs to modify to include the location of your $TOMCAT_HOME. No biggie, a very easy modification. Also I found it very easy to deploy the code in a Linux environment. I am not sure if it would be easy if you are in a Windows environment.

In summary this book met my expectation. My expectation is simply to get myself as quickly as possible to get up to speed with Java Web Services. It provided enough information for me to pick what type of Java web services (RESTful or SOAP-based) I want to implement for my project.

About the Author
Thomas S. Hischak is professor of theatre at the State University of New York at Cortland. He is the author of thirteen books, including Through the Screen Door: What Happened to the Broadway Musical When it Went to Hollywood (Scarecrow Press, 2004), Enter the Players: New York Stage Actors in the Twentieth Century (Scarecrow Press, 2003), and Boy Loses Girl: Broadway's Librettists (Scarecrow Press, 2002). Hischak is also coeditor of The Oxford Companion to American Theatre, 3rd Edition and winner of a Choice "Outstanding Academic Book" award.

Compact Compendium for Condensed Matter

This text, under Springer's line of Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics, does serve a purpose.
As others have noted, it is terse and advanced. It is slimmer than many other Quantum Field Theory textbooks.
(Note: Banks, Modern Quantum Field Theory,2008, is another text of comparable length !).
Therefore, one must be cognizant of the student for whom this book is addressed. And, who might that be ?
My advice: Peruse the seven appendices. If you are able to follow the reasoning and (especially) the mathematical
derivations, then chances are good that this textbook will be readily assimilated. However, even then, you will be
challenged throughout the text to supply missing derivations. This, not a bad thing, as it reinforces stamina for the
graduate student. In order to appreciate the text, one must (at the very least) be adept at "filling in the details."
First Chapter will be much in the nature of review: Classical and Quantum Mechanics should already be embedded in
your memory. Dirac Deltas and Fourier Series should already be part and parcel of your background. If not, then this
chapter will be your first challenging exercise ! Notice: mention of Casimir energy and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking,
already on Page 10. Onward to Relativistic considerations in Chapter Two:
Recall the use of dimensional analysis and the metric of Special Relativity. Lagrangians and internal symmetry are given
a nice, though brief, exposition. Already, Page 24, we are introduced to phonons and a scalar-field analog of Poynting Vector !
Creation and Annihilation Operators--these are the substance of the first two chapters. Facility in manipulating these entities
must be second-nature. (Obviously, these operators should have been mastered in your Quantum Mechanics Course).
Thus, is completed twenty pages of this book. Fast-paced, but, so far, most of this material should be in the nature of review.
Third Chapter, Perturbation Theory. Now, we enter the realm of heavy computation. If Green's Functions and contour integrals
are foreign to you, then this will be a difficult Chapter. Wick's Theorem nicely expounded. Applications then follow--that is,
Yukawa Potential and Mossbauer Effect. The qualitative discussion which accompanies is to be noted for its profundity.
Feynman Rules are next. Follow along with paper and pencil . As the author says: "....a little playing around will convince you...."
(see Page 42). Some wise words from the author help to make this difficult chapter palatable. As one ascertains, the book's
pace is accelerating (Chapter's One and Two were simpler meal rations, Three and Four are the meat and potatoes).
Fifth Up: Loops, Unitarity and Analyticity. Now, if your complex variable theory is rusty, you will be completely lost.
A tough chapter, ending with a nice section on Dimensional Regularization. ( Memorize the Feynman Integral Identities,
that is, section 5.32. And, if deriving equation 5.45 from 5.44 proves difficult, then you have lost something along the way).
As the reader can see, much ground has been covered in sixty pages ! This is fast paced, indeed. If, however, the text is
being utilized in a course, alongside lectures and assistance--then, it should be assailable. And, so we progress. Next,
considered: Formalities (LSZ sketched), followed by Fermions (This,an exceptional Chapter Seven) as prelude to QED.
We read: "The Ward Identity is a route to establishing gauge invariance." (Page 92). From QED to electrons in solids.
Determinants, Green's Functions, Fourier Transforms, Chapter Nine,thus replete with the full mathematical panoply.
And, it goes without saying, if your mathematics is rusty, all will remain quite foreign . Applications in Chapter Nine
are interesting and insightful (including Debye screening, Plasma Oscillations, Landau Damping)...models and modelling.
Bosons, of course, follow. This includes thoughtful qualitative discussion. But, note, too (Page 131) : "The nonlinear
Schrodinger equation we get by varying the action--that is, varying equation 10.41, is often used as a model...." Again,
if the student is unable to perform said variation of the action, then all that follows will make little sense. So, try it !
Interesting mathematics is met throughout: Matsubara Sums , the incredibly useful identity: In Det A= Tr In A,
Complex Fields, Generating Functionals, Expansions, Gamma Functions, Berezin Integrals (Chapter 14: Path Integrals).
The list can be expanded: Clifford Algebra (Page 72), Automorhism Group (Page 39), Heron's Area Formula (Page 46).
What one quickly ascertains is that you do not get far without "doing the math" which comes along for the Physics ride.
A nice mention of Supersymmetry--alongside Gaussian Integrals (Pages 174-177), makes for fascinating interlude.
Green, Fourier, Cauchy: If your math is not up to par, this text will prove impenetrable. Perhaps, as I have done,the point
needs to be stressed. This is not such a bad text. It requires some work. Examples of such work, left for the student:
(1) Page 57: "Expansion of In(1+x) and perform the sum..."
(2) Page 33: " We see that the energy of interaction is...."
(3) Page 48: "..and do the x-integral..."
(4) Page 87: " the inverse of the matrix is easily found, and we find for the propagator..."
(5) Page 115 : "In Fourier Space, 9.85.9.86 & 9.87 combine to give..."
Prerequisites should be firmly in hand. The book, while brief, has performed a service, and, as set forth in the Preface:
"...many examples in the text are drawn from the field of Condensed Matter physics..." and "....tried to concentrate on the
basic conceptual issues." Part One ( to chapter eleven) emphasizes Operator methods.Part Two (Later): Path Integral Methods.
But, as with any Graduate-level textbook, if your undergraduate physics and mathematics is spotty, or cursory, then much
here will be extremely challenging.( Collateral Study of Chang's 1990 text Introduction to Quantum Field Theory, also with a
two-pronged Operators/Path Integrals approach--but,including Schwinger-- will prove invaluable !).
Thus, recommended for a compact, advanced, presentation of basics--
basics then applied to condensed matter systems.

Sadly, this might be the best book available

This book really isn't very good. If you have a lecturer simultaneously teaching you Quantum Field Theory, it can be useful to refer back to this book for the occasional thing you might have missed. But getting any useful kind of understanding of QFT only from this book is probably impossible.

The main problem with the book is that it leaves out important steps that, if you can fill them in on your own, you already know the subject well enough that you probably don't need the book. This applies to both the mathematical derivations and the text itself.

An example is the chapter on Feynman rules, which in the third paragraph begins discussing how to "determine to which matrix elements of S the diagram corresponds when sandwiched between initial and final states", without first bothering to explain what diagrams are being talked about, or what it even means for a diagram to 'correspond' to a matrix element.

My QFT lecturer has acknowledged that the book is fairly bad, which irate students point out to him every time the course is given, but claims he has not been able to find any better alternative.

One to keep!

What a lovely counting book - which is really a book showing some of the many diverse configurations that can make up a family. My kids loved the illustrations. Together we tried to think of families we knew that were similar to the ones depicted.

Counting but not counting

Interesting book that is a counting book with no numerals. Strange that it seems to work but the main focus is on the collection of varied people who make up the one family: various ages - intergenerational, people of color, etc. Children reading this book will count the items in the pictures which mostly adhere to the number being discussed, but sometimes not. ALlogether an interesting book for reasons that have nothing to do with counting.

Rajendra S. Sisodia

Raj is professor of marketing and founding director of the Center for Marketing Technology at Bentley College. He has a Ph.D. in marketing and business policy from Columbia University. He has published nearly 100 articles in journals such as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Strategy, Journal of Business Research, and many others. He also writes frequently for the Wall Street Journal. His research, teaching, and consulting expertise spans the areas of strategic marketing, marketing productivity, marketing ethics, and stakeholder-based marketing. In 2003, he was cited as one of “50 Leading Marketing Thinkers” by the U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Marketing. Raj consults with and provides executive seminars for companies in various industries. Clients have included Sprint, Volvo, and IBM, to name a few. He coauthored The Rule of Three (Free Press, 2002) with Jag Sheth. Other recent books include Tectonic Shift: The Geoeconomic Realignment of Globalizing Markets (Sage Publications, 2006) and Does Marketing Need Reform? (M.E. Sharpe, Inc., 2006), both with Jag Sheth. David B. Wolfe

David is an internationally recognized customer behavior expert in middle-age and older markets. He is the author of Serving the Ageless Market (McGraw-Hill, 1990) and more recently Ageless Marketing: Strategies for Connecting with the Hearts and Minds of the New Customer Majority (Dearborn Publishing, 2003). Jagdish N. Sheth

Jag is the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing in the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. He has published 26 books, more than 200 articles, and is nationally and internationally known for his scholarly contributions in consumer behavior, relationship marketing, competitive strategy, and geopolitical analysis. His book The Rule of Three (Free Press, 2002), coauthored with Raj Sisodia, has altered current notions on competition in business. This book has been translated into five languages and was the subject of a seven-part television series by CNBC Asia. Jag’s list of consulting clients around the world is long and impressive, including AT&T, GE, Motorola, Whirlpool, and 3M, to name just a few. He is frequently quoted and interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fortune, Financial Times, and radio shows and television networks such as CNN, Lou Dobbs, and more. He is also on the board of directors of several public companies. In 2004, he was honored with the two highest awards bestowed by the American Marketing Association: the Richard D. Irwin Distinguished Marketing Educator Award and the Charles Coolidge Parlin Award.

Impressive Examples of Serving the Full Gamut of Stakeholders

What is a Firm of Endearment? The authors argue that their example companies share a common set of core values, policies, and operating attributes which include:

1. aligning the interests of all stakeholder groups (customers, employees, partners, investors, and society) rather than seeking profit optimization

2. below-average executive compensation

3. open-door policies

4. employee compensation and benefits are above average for their industry

5. above-average employee training

6. empower employees to satisfy customers

7. hire employees who are passionate about the company's purpose

8. humanize customer and employee experiences

9. enjoy below-average marketing costs

10. honor the spirit as well as the letter of laws

11. focus on corporate culture as a competitive advantage

12. are often innovative in their industries

Companies identified include extensive examples drawn from Commerce Bank, Container Store, Costco, Harley-Davidson, Honda, IDEO, IKEA, jetBlue, Johnson & Johnson, Jordan's Furniture, New Balance, Patagonia, Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, Timberland, Toyota, Trader Joe's, UPS, Wegmans, and Whole Foods.

These companies are often contrasted with Wal-Mart and the Good to Great Companies identified by Jim Collins in 2001 in terms of stock price growth.

The authors argue that there is a new level of consciousness emerging that rewards those who do good while doing well. The implication is that all firms should shift to stakeholder optimization and the cultural values identified in the example companies.

While they don't make this argument, it's clear that the authors have identified many of the mindsets that lead a company to seek optimizing results for all stakeholders.

Before you assume total cause and effect, I would like to raise some issues not fully addressed in the book:

1. This is an after-the-fact evaluation. As such, (like Good to Great), we may mostly be seeing what the leaders are proud of . . . rather than what caused their success. For example, Southwest's success is focused on their corporate culture. But the company also has a better business model than almost any other airline (Ryanair's is better) and does a better job of fuel cost hedging than any other U.S. airline. Those factors aren't mentioned.

2. These companies are almost all in consumer products or services. A class of socially conscious consumers has sprung up who look hard for such firms. It's not clear that OEM and industrial buyers have evolved their preferences nearly to the same extent. So many of the lessons may only apply consumer goods and services (except for those validated by Gallup for having a motivated and effective group of people working for you).

3. Almost all of these firms are highly effective business model innovators who have gained enormous advantages over competitors who seldom innovate their business models. As a result, they can afford practices that may or may not pay off in profit without incurring any negative reaction. The next business model innovation will pay for the cost.

I was surprised that this book didn't look at the study I made from 1992-2001 that identified continuing business model innovation as the single best factor for explaining high levels of corporate performance (see The Ultimate Competitive Advantage). The books share some examples in common (including Jordan's Furniture and Timberland), but many of FoE's examples are also superior business model innovators (Amazon, BMW, CarMax, Caterpillar, Container Store, Costco, eBay, Google, Harley-Davidson, IDEO, IKEA, jetBlue, Patagonia, Starbucks, Trader Joe's, UPS, Wegmans, and Whole Food).

4. It often pays better to serve stakeholder interests than to ignore them. Why? Because ignoring stakeholders often burdens both the company and the stakeholder with costs and experiences that neither want. This economic case for stakeholder focus isn't fully developed outside of the customer arena.

5. The book emphasizes sustainability, but much of that argument is built around companies disappearing from the Fortune 500 (something that happens whenever a merger happens . . . which doesn't mean that the organization goes away, just the corporate headquarters in most cases). In the research of my students on environmental sustainability (see Hiroshi Fukushi's work, A Strategic Approach to the Environmentally Sustainable Business, for example), it's apparent that making the environment cleaner than when you touched it is economically advantaged in most situations. The idea of sustainability is based on the outmoded notion of not doing too much damage rather than finding profits in making the world better than you found it.

But it's a good book that creates more questions than it answers. This one will probably stimulate some more careful thinking in the area of where seeking to be more considerate of others is going to create better results as well as better sleep.

A very inspiring read based on a strong research foundation

If the reason for a company’s existence is just profit, they won’t be very profitable. But if a company isn’t profitable, it won’t exist long enough to serve any other purpose. That’s what we call the purpose-profit paradox.

Firms of Endearment: How World Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose draws from an extensive research study looking for companies that focused on endearing themselves to their customers, employees, suppliers, communities, and shareholders. These FoEs are driven by “aligning the interests of all in such a way that no stakeholder group gains at the expense of other stakeholder groups; rather, they all prosper together.”

The authors and their research team narrowed their initial list of 60 companies to “28 companies we felt best manifested a high standard of humanistic performance” and did a financial analysis on these from an investor viewpoint. They found “these widely loved companies (those that are publicly traded) outperformed the S& P 500 by huge margins, over ten-, five-, and three-year time horizons.”

They also compared these FoEs to the 11 companies profiled in Jim Collins book, Good to Great. None of the Good to Great companies made their cut. The FoEs outperformed them by ratios as high as 3 to 1.

The book dives deep into understanding what sets FoEs apart from their peers. It’s brimming with insightful stories and examples from many of the firms. Here’s a partial list their “distinctive set of core values, policies, and operating attributes:

• Subscribe to a purpose for being that is different from and goes beyond making money.
• Actively align the interests of all stakeholder groups, not just balance them.
• Devote considerably more time than their competitors to employee training.
• Their employee turnover is far lower than the industry average.
• Consciously humanize the company experience for customers and employees, as well as creating a nurturing work environment.
• Project a genuine passion for customers, and emotionally connect with them at a deep level.
• Consider their corporate culture to be their greatest asset and primary source of competitive advantage.”

Like Good Company: Business Success in the Worthiness Era, this is a very inspiring read based on a strong research foundation. The authors persuasively argue that we’re now into the “Age of Transcendence…the highest pinnacle that humanity has yet ascended to.” This research is further proof that the future belongs to strong, values-based, moral leaders who use their organizations to enrich everyone involved and make the world a better place.

About the Author
Dr Jamuna Pai has spent the last twenty years being the one that A-list Bollywood stars, top industrialists and Miss Indias have turned to for their skin problems. She has also pioneered the skincare movement in this country, being the first to introduce many techniques to India including Botox, medi-facials, aesthetic peels as well as the Spanish brightening peel. A doctor of medicine and surgery from the prestigious Nair Hospital and TNMC Medical, Dr Pai is one of India's leading medical cosmetologists who has been awarded the coveted Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award and the Bharat Gaurav Award for her excellent service in the field of skincare. Her chain of skincare clinics, Blush, was established in 1994 and - many clinics and franchises later - she continues to work with celebs, models and Miss Indias. She also trains doctors in aesthetic medicine at her training academy, DJPIMAC (Dr Jamuna Pai's Institute for Medical and Aesthetic Cosmetology). She lives and works in Mumbai. This is her first book.
