Very well written, easy to follow; this book makes search less complicated

I’ll start with the structure, the book exists out of two parts. The first part explains the core features while the second one helps you get the core functionality out to production. The writers are right to say that you should read the book in the right order and not just skip some parts since one chapter flows into the other (you can always skim/scan over the pages if you really want to 'skip', it’s better to keep structure). A truly good thing about this book is that it’s future proof. As technology moves at high pace and Elasticsearch 2.0 came along while the book was written, the authors left out the features which disappeared in version 2.0.
The 498 pages are all worth your money, this book seems to be written in a zero bulls*** style (= it gets straight to the point, just the way I like it for techbooks). Everything is well explained, there’s sample code when needed (= code of how it could look like) and the terminology is clarified in a comprehensive manner. The information is real condense but luckily at the end of each chapter there’s a summery which makes it easier to keep your head in the game.
Then there’s the appendix which is again very extensive and very detailed. It’s another 90 pages including cases which cover stuff that could come in handy in some use cases.
TIP:
Don’t read this book to fast your head might blow off due to the information being dense. :-D Take your time! But don’t worry it’s well written so it shouldn’t be hard to understand.
CONCLUSION:
Buying this book should be a nobrainer for anyone wanting to implement a great open source search engine without already being an expert in the field.

By far the best book on the topic

Elasticsearch is a beast of a search server system and volumes can be written about it, this book is therefore bit thick around 450+ pages but then it is also easy to read, succinct and goes through the very essential details that anyone working at the enterprise level would appreciate.
The books is divided into two parts. Part1 starts with very basic introduction on searching in general, the second chapter (one my favorite chapters) gives a bird eye view on ES major functionality (indexing, searching, aggregation, scaling out etc). The following chapters then drills down into more gory detail, and covers various scenarios, best practices etc that would help exploit Elasticsearch to its full potential (topics such as clustering, relationships, de-normalization).
The second part of the book explains performance optimization and tuning, and administration.
Chapter 10 is the favorite chapter in the book that goes into various optimization scenarios and strategies such as caching, grouping and indexing. I think it is a must read.
All in all, am very happy with this book and is a must read for anyone who'd want to master Elasticsearch.

An excelent guide to becoming an Elasticsearch expert

I got interested in this book because I have used Solr in some of my projects and have already red Manning's 'Solr in action'. So I was curios to see what Elastisearch is and what features it offers.
This is definitely a good book to get you started with ElasticSearch. It begins with a generic discussion of problems specific to search engines and ElasticSearch features that address those problems, then moves on into the basic usage of ElasticSearch for indexing and searching documents, and finally explains advanced features like relationships between documents, cluster scaling and performance optimizations. As I already had experience with searching via Solr, I was tempted to skip some of the early chapters, but I'm glad I did not because although early chapters are easy to understand for beginners, they are mixed with various tech tips. Ofcourse, later chapters are full of valuable information, too, presented as a series of use cases and examples that make complex topics easy to understand.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to understand how search engines work in general or how ElasticSearch works, in particular.
