I have loved Edward Scissorhands since 1990 when the movie released

This graphic novel was not on my radar until I ran across it one evening in Barnes & Noble. I have loved Edward Scissorhands since 1990 when the movie released. Yes, it’s been that long. A quick flip through and I instantly became a fan of Drew Rausch. Seriously. He is that talented. His art style mixed with the colorists who worked on this volume set the tone of the story, but also the atmosphere of Edward Scissorhands so perfectly. I attempted to do a video review, but it became a fangirling episode rather than a critical look at the story and the graphic novel as a whole.

This story picks up decades after the movie so I would recommend watching the movie first if at all possible (recommended, but not necessary). We start by finding out a bit of what Edward has been up to and then we return to the Boggs family. In this all new adventure Megs goes digging in a storage locker after her mother refuses to visit her grandmother’s headstone. In a box she finds a bunch of stuff linked to Edward Scissorhands. When she presents the stuff to her mom, her mom encourages her to forget it. She reads her grandmother’s diary anyway and her curiosity gets the better of her. She goes to visit Edward Scissorhands. From there she finds out that Edward accidentally released a previously decommissioned experiment that is wrecking havoc on the neighborhood. Together with Edward Megs hunts down the heartless Eli.

Characters – the characters really come alive thanks to the amazing art of Drew Rausch. The facial expressions are hilarious. If you liked Edward Scissorhands in the movie you will like him in this story as well. Megs is the typical 16-year old outcast which fits perfectly with Edward.

Setting – same as the movie, quaint neighborhood

Plot – well thought out and planned, fast paced. Makes you want to find out what happens next.

Conflict – Edward brings to life a decommissioned experiment who ends up kidnapping one of the neighborhood children.

Resolution – With the help of Megs, Edward is seen as more than a monster.

Art – Fan-fricking-tastic! Seriously some of the best I have seen.

I loved this so much. Now I am completely invested in the series. Luck for me Volume 2: Whole Again releases Oct 22nd! Volume 1 gets 5 stars from me.

A really good sequel to the movie with really great art by Drew Rausch

'Edward Scissorhands Volume 1: Parts Unknown' by Kate Leth with art by Drew Rausch is a pretty great sequel to the movie.

The story picks up with the final scenes from the movie and moves ahead two generations. Kim (the character played by Wynona Ryder) has died after a long life, but her daughter and grandaughter still live nearby. Edward still lives in the house on the hill, and the people down below still think he's a murderer. When he is roaming the house one day, he makes a discovery. This leads to a mistake, and a new strange creature is unleashed on the town below, but is he gentle like Edward or more malicious?

Drew Rausch's art for this are perfect! There are even some nods to other Tim Burton works (I know I saw Oogie Boogie in there somewhere). I felt like the story was a perfect sequel to the movie, and I loved how it picked right up again. Edward is still as sweet and misunderstood as ever. I really liked this one.

Set years and years after the movie...

Artwork: 5/5 stars. Like the movie, this book knows what should have a darker more gothic look and what should look bright and cheery. All of it is done in a cutesy way that just works. I cannot imagine any other artist / art telling this story any better.

Story: 3/5 As for the story, it’s just okay. Kim’s granddaughter confronts her mother about what happened so long ago. While the two fight, a new generation has emerged from the castle to cause fear in the townsfolk. It’s not bad, it just feels like it could have been more.

Overall a 4/5. It’s definitely for fans of the movie, but new fans could enjoy it as well (though they will only get a quick hint of the backstory).

Of greatest importance is how these sculptures relate to both the art in Cambodia and that in India, and to determine what these relationships can tell us about the process (called Indianization) by which Indian culture, religion, and art were adapted in Southeast Asia.

An Insider's View of the American Aristocracy

Virtually all other books describing America's moneyed class have been written by social scientists, primarily sociologists and economists, or romantic novelists, who do not have a clue as to how these people really live.

Aldrich, on the other hand, comes from one of America's old moneyed families (his grandfather was a prominent U.S. Senator at the turn of the century and his uncle was Nelson Rockefeller). Educated at St. Paul's and Harvard in the fifties, he was provided with all of the benefits that money can provide.

Unlike the modern ultra-rich, however, he was also provided a conscience and a sense of duty to his community. This book is, in large part, his effort to justify his own existence and that of his fellows to a society that often views them as little more than leeches who had the good fortune to be born into great wealth. In my opinion, and I suspect his as well, he ultimately fails, but he does provide the best defense of inherited wealth that I have read. In the course of that defense, he provides great insight into how Old Money thinks -- F. Scott Fitzgerald was right; they really are different from the rest of us.

Those who enjoy this book should buy a copy of Money and Class in America: Notes and Observations on Our Civil Religion by Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's magazine and himself from Old Money.

I've read them ALL (this one last) -- Read this one FIRST!

Over the course of a few too many years I have acquired a 3-foot stack of classic books on wealth, status and power in America, and this is both the latest addition and the undisputed spiritual (!) capstone of the collection. "Rich and nuanced" is how I would characterize Mr. Aldrich's comprehensive assessment of the phenomenon of inherited wealth and established social class in the land of the American Dream. Mythic stuff indeed (it was this word that compelled me to buy the book) -- and Aldrich's background and skills are more than up to the challenge of rendering it, in all its paradox, consternation and complexity, for the genuinely interested reader.

The brief panning reviews below mystified me as well as they did the other reviewer. Aldrich starts out not with anything construable as a "justification", but rather with a withering indictment of the source of his family's wealth -- in itself a mini-education in the dynamics of 19th century pork barrel politics. Aldrich's book is both a sort of personal exorcism of family demons that others would just as soon whitewash and preen themselves over, and a subtle and multi-dimensional account of a great many interrelated issues surrounding the institution of inherited wealth and privilege, and its effect on those both inside and outside the golden pale.

"Reasoned" and "balanced" are two other adjectives that suggest themselves with regard to the book's overall project. Outsiders may resent his occasional displays of sympathy for his motley compatriots in hyper-enfranchisement, but you'll have to search elsewhere (e.g. the better-written WASP Supremacy diatribes) for the "our shortcomings are colorful foibles, theirs are hideous crimes" pathology that afflicts the smug somnambulists of the Far Right.

True, Aldrich hasn't climaxed his public catharsis by giving away his patrimony (though I'd be surprised if he hasn't been more than usually financially generous in all the right directions); but anyone accusing him of a lack of noblesse oblige is just being perverse or uncomprehending regarding the general thrust and intention of this eminently worthwhile read.

In the author's defense, I can only suggest that the one virtually unassailable self-justification for Establishment predations -- "If it weren't us on top, it would inevitably be others, and probably the more harsh for lack of experience" -- is rendered just a bit less disconcerting by the occasional production of a gentleman as truly humane, culturally enriching, and deeply entertaining as Mr. Aldrich.

As for the alleged elitist style: I too lack basic French, and tend to resent its use in expository prose. But "blipping over" a phrase here and there doesn't usually harm the overall sense of a well-heeled writer's material; and a modicum of humility obliges any reader to make an effort to step outside himself and honor the sensibilities of the more accomplished.

In this and other matters of vocabulary, would the disgruntled reviewer below prefer Aldrich to write down to him? Given the hazards of such behavior's leading to intellectual patronization or worse (i.e., just plain lazy thinking and/or exposition), I'll take the occasional mini-slight to my natural dignity as an untutored reader -- there are dictionaries, after all -- and accept my cultural patrimony whole and unblighted by stylistic censorship.

The comment below about most writers on this topic being outsiders is well taken. "Old Money" lacks Ferdinand Lundberg's statistically-fuelled rantings, and stops a bit short of fellow outsider Veblen's ironic savaging of the cultural degeneracies of endemic privilege. For those interested in the roots and mechanisms of wealth-as-power, Lundberg's trenchant "The Rich and the Super Rich" is irreplaceable; Epstein's and Fussel's mordant depictions of the invidious lifestyle are both entertaining and informative; and the other dozen-odd major authors are sources of endlessly varied morsels of cocktail party erudition. But no one ties it all together in as many different ways at once as Aldrich. Read him first, instead of last as I did, and avail yourself of an impeccable standard of value for any other study on this topic that you're likely to find.

excellent insider's portrait and analysis

Don't know what these other readers' problem is - hopefully not the envy and resentment that the author acknowledges as a natural byproduct of privilege! Aldrich is thoughtful, erudite and honest. Is he justifying himself? To a point, of course. Have you ever read a book that doesn't in some way promote the author and his values? He succeeds in a difficult endeavor, namely to describe a culture and a mentality; this he does with sympathy to its ideals and deep skepticism about its true motives and record. Also, though there may be a few too many of his own family anecdotes, it is an entertaining and informative read.

An Excellent Update! Required Reading for anyone owning a guitar.

Dan Erlewine's latest edition of the Guitar Player Repair Guide is a worthy update. There are numerous additions and updates anyone familiar with the previous editions should check out. If you are new to the guitar, this book is the maintenance and repair guide than will help you maintain your investment, and even give you great tips on how to hod-rod, customize or fix your guitar.

The book is organized and logically arranged with Basic, DIY and Deep sections in each chapter. Electric, Acoustic and Bass guitars are all covered with detailed narrative and clear pictures.

Even if you are not up to jobs like fret work or truss rod adjustments, this book will prepare you to talk with your friendly neighborhood guitar repair guy about getting your guitar back to its former glory.

Very highly recommended. Make this your first purchase for your guitar dedicated bookshelf (doesn't everyone have those?).

Good for intermediate, bad for beginners

The book provides amazing detail on all aspects of maintaining and repairs guitars. If you have at least intermediate guitar experience its a great book for guitar upkeep. However for casual users and anyone who is hoping to get into this type of repair look elsewhere. It gives little explanation for those with a lack of basic knowledge and you'll spend more time looking up diagrams and terminology then reading the book.

The write is slightly biased towards certain guitars, which while popular and common, are not owned by everyone. Chapters that should be basic universal guitar help are used to spout particular brands and their specific upkeep which doesn't help those on off brand guitars. If you own a Fender or Gibson you'll be set but most other brands are left in the wayside

To summarize good for more experienced users, bad for those starting out. Good for anyone owning a guitar who wants upkeep help. Better for anyone owning a Fender or Gibson. Despite the negative comments if you have the basics down this book provides excellent tools for items as basic as cleaning your finish to repairing rotting tuners. A great book for a serious guitarist to own.

A caveat

I bought this item, thinking it was Barry Longyear's original novelette. This item is NOT the original novelette (a reprint of which is at Enemy Mine). Note the joint authorship on this item between Barry Longyear and David Gerrold. This item is a novelization of the movie "Enemy Mine" (1985).

More confusing yet, the "Look Inside" link (as of 21 Apr 2009) takes you (incorrectly) to the original novel as reprinted by IUniverse, not (correctly) to this novelization of the movie as published by Charter Books. The "Just so you know..." message leaves the impression that they're just different editions of the same book. They're not just different editions. They're different stories.

A few of the differences between the two: The original novel begins with the confrontation between human and alien on the ground. How they got there is later told in retrospect in a couple of paragraphs. The novelization of the movie begins at the "starbase" and descibes the space battle step by step in 5 chapters/19 pages. The original novel puts them on an island up against frequent tidal waves. The equivalent in the novelization of the movie is repeated meteor showers, and they're on a continent. In the original, they eat snakes to survive. In the novelization, they eat mock turtles. Pretty much all of the details in the stories are different, but the general gist is similar. The original novel is 96 pages long. The novelization of the movie has 218 pages.

Between the two, I prefer what I've read of the original novel, but the novelization of the movie is a good story, too, and it's cheap: I bought my like-new used paperback for a penny (plus $3.99 shipping and handling, of course).

Heartfelt

This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. I believe it was originally published in a magazine as a novella and then reprinted in book form to make money. It is rather short, but every page is worth five in a typical novel. The story is deceptively simple: a human and an alien crashland on an ocean world and most work together to survive. The story has been done before, but never so well as this. The beginning is solid suspense while the middle is a tear jerker. The final third is less intense and moves to more of a cerebral level. It is a fitting conclusion, though not as intense as the first two parts. All in all, Enemy Mine deserves its many accolades. By the way, read the book before you see the movie--the acting is good but they changed too many things for a fan to be satisfied.

Barry Longyear's story "Enemy Mine" is a gem of the finest kind.

"Enemy Mine," by Barry Longyear was first brought to my attention in about 1980 in Longyear's multiple award winning "Manifest Destiny" saga of mankind's highest adventure on the frontier of the far future. I could not put the book down once I began reading it because of the great and I mean great character development of the interaction between two protagonists, one an hermaphrodite reptilian alien fighter pilot for the exotic home alien planet, Draco, and the other a United States of Earth fighter pilot battling the alien on the planet Fyrine IV, near the Draconian's parent planet. I know that this sounds like a far reach for a Hugo, Nebula, and John. W. Campbell Award winning author, but far from it. Enemy mine was so well written and so beautifully developed that it was made into a movie produced by Wolfgang Petersen starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr. in 1985. The movie was never heavily advertised and thus only a small fraction of potential viewers were ever aware that it even existed. The story itself was a gem, and as often happens the video version of the book was not as well developed as the original book itself. None-the-less, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Dennis Quaid portrayed the original characters in excellent fashion, and they did the book great justice. I was so very lucky to have procured a CBS Fox Video VHS copy of the movie which I cherish, and which I often watch. To share my adulation for the story Enemy Mine, I highly recommend that you read it; you'll thank me for introducing it to you.

About the Author
Jacqueline (Jackie) Helfgott is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at Seattle University, where she has taught since 1993. She received her B.A.from the University of Washington in Psychology/Society & Justice and Masters and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in Administration of Justice with a graduate minor in Psychology. Her work has been published in major journals including Criminal Justice and Behavior, Journal of Forensic Psychology Practice, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, The Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, Federal Probation, The International Review of Victimology, and others. Her research has focused in two general directions – the intersection of psychology, criminology, and criminal justice and institutional and community corrections. Specific research foci and areas of expertise include: psychopathy - its role in the criminal justice system and the prediction of violent recidivism and dangerousness; criminal behavior and the use of crime typologies at different stages of the criminal justice process; offender reentry; correctional program evaluation; and restorative justice - balancing victim, offender, and citizen needs, rights, and interests.

He is a Joint Editor-in-Chief of Bioethics, the journal of the International Association of Bioethics. • Provides a comprehensive review of the most common, relevant, and established NiTi processing methods including conventional metallurgy, powder metallurgy, forming, machining and cutting, joining, heat treatments, and finishing processes. Also novel processing approaches such as additive manufacturing are included. These promising new processes are expected to receive more attention toward commercialization of niche devices as well as for industrial manufacturing.

• Attempts to characterize the fatigue behavior of shape memory alloys with an emphasis on NiTi fatigue. To this end, major fatigue models for SMAs are reviewed. Finally, a few examples of fatigue analysis of these alloys are presented and discussed.

• Uses a single case study in several chapters of the book to illustrate the main steps of the development process of the actuators.
