About the Author
Martin J. Collen is a “Republican” AMERICAN, born in Oakland, California, and raised in Los Angeles. He is an internationally recognized physician who, for more than 30 years, has practiced “the art and science of medicine” according to the tenets of the Hippocratic Oath. He is the author of more than 250 original research and review publications, including books, articles, and abstracts. He graduated with a BA in Mathematics from UCLA in 1966, and attended Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Chicago, Illinois, graduating with an MD degree in 1970. He completed a year of internship in medicine and a year of residency in General Surgery at UCI, and went on to complete an additional two years of residency in Internal Medicine and a two year Fellowship in Gastroenterology at UCLA until 1977. He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCI, from 1977 to 1980, and Instructor of the Year for two successive years. He completed a research Fellowship in Gastroenterology from 1980 to 1985 at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and was Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Gastrointestinal Research at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., from 1985 to 1990. He moved back to California in 1990, where he was Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University from 1990 to 1995 and Clinical Professor of Medicine from 1995 to 2005. He earned an Executive MBA in Health Care from UCI in 1999. Since 1995, he has been in private practice as a gastroenterologist in the Inland Empire. Dr. Collen lives with his wife, Roberta, and their youngest of four children in Riverside, California. Mark J. Handwerker is a “Democratic” AMERICAN, born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in three of the five boroughs of the Big Apple. He is a teacher and writer with more than a dozen publications, including books and articles in a number of scientific fields. He graduated with a BS from CCNY in Psychology/Biology and moved to California in 1972 were he attended UCI, graduating with a PhD in Biology in 1976. He began teaching for the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1982 until accepting a position with the Temecula Valley Unified School District in 1988, where he continues to teach young people the basic methodology and principles of science once esteemed and put into practice by the courageous Founders of this Nation. Dr. Handwerker lives with his wife, Judith, in Riverside, California.

Excellent, clearly written, and concise explanation of one of the most important and serious issues affecting our country. As a physician it is becoming increasingly clear that something must be done to remedy the ever present problems of skyrocketing healthcare costs and limitations of access. This book presents a clear and practical solution to the healthcare crisis. I can only hope that our politicians can get over their constant partisan bickering and come up with a solution as well thought out as the one presented in this book. Kudos Drs. Collen and Handwerker for job well done and a book that will hopefully make a real, tangible difference to our society.

Big glaring omission in an otherwise great book.

I've loved this whole series but in this book there is a GLARING omission. I kept thinking of it as I read the book and I'm still thinking of it the next day.
Kids whose parents die get social security death benefits. They continue as long as a kid is in school. http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10085.pdf
I know they would not pay for everything the kids need but it sure would help. No one, nor Ressa, Shane, any of the lawyers or the judge make any mention of this in the whole dang book. Come on Donna! Do your research. You are good about witting about artists and their art. You obviously researched that. Why not the social security issues?
Great story line, would have been a 5 star book for me if there would have been a listing of that in income or some mention of getting any social security.

Kinky but rather blase

This one centered on the blossoming romance between Shane, Will’s other son, and Reesa, his one-night stand, whom he can’t stop thinking about. As soon as he finds her, he realizes how much he can’t live without her and decides to prove it to the reluctant Reesa.

Although Shane is sure Reesa fell for him that night, how could it possibly work with Reesa’s busy schedule and her constant struggle to raise her dead sister’s four kids? That was definitely an honorable quality in her. She would need somebody that is responsible and hard-working, and she doesn’t think that fits Shane Larson, the graphic novelist with the long hair and tattoos. He’s basically a big kid himself. Well, she’s got enough kids to take care of. But then she realizes that Shane was making her and the kids smile again. Shane was doing everything possible to prove that he was in it for the long haul. Still, the boy moved pretty fast. Wanting to marry her already? In love with her? Jeez! The Larson boys don’t like to wait, do they?

I admit that hearing about all the other people being coupled and about the upcoming wedding of Will and Jessica was daunting and blasé. Must we keep on hearing about all these couples and marriage? Another annoying thing was the overuse of phrases like “he laughed” or “she laughed” with dialogue. I mean, seriously, how could they laugh out their speech all the time?

Overall, this was another kinky romance, but I was just getting tired of it all about midway through.

Love triumphs!

Captured In Ink (Art of Love Series)When Shane wakes up to find Ann gone, he's devastated because he knows he's found the love of his life. Two weeks later, he goes to help his friend put a gutter on a house. While there, Shane finds out Ann is Ressa, a single woman raising her nieces and nephews after the death of her sister and brother-in-law. She expects him to turn tail and run the other way. Instead, he walks into the house and talks to the kids as well as her best friend.
This is a great story of a man who knows what he wants and is not afraid to go after it. It is also about a woman who has lost a lot and is just doing the best she can. How this man and woman figure out how to be apart of each others lives is a great read. The supporting cast of characters will make you laugh out loud!

About the Author
Reem al-Nimer is a Palestinian activist and the widow of Abu al-Abbas, the iconic leader of the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF). Hailing from landed Palestinian notability, she grew up in Beirut, where she joined Yasser Arafat s Fatah Movement. Her marriage to Abu al-Abbas took her to Tunis, Damascus, Libya, and Baghdad the city where she first met her husband in 1975 and last saw him shortly before the US invasion in 2003. Abu al-Abbas died in US custody in March, 2004.

a story of human struggle against manipulation and suppression

Perhaps war is not new to the Holy Land, but the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been the deadliest and the most destructive. Public opinion worldwide is split between the two factions and media agencies and news channels tend to side with one of the conflicting parties, leaving the truth blurred and difficult to identify. There are thousands of documents published on the subject, almost daily, but few truly reveal the more important aspects of the conflict. However, approaching the very sensitive and particular history of the Palestinian- Israeli conflict requires reading not only relevant official material exposed after a certain period of time, but also the personal memoirs of its major actors, the individuals whose lives have actually altered and affected history.

Reem Al-Nimer, in her "Curse of the Achille Lauro," places in our hands the story of her life with Abu al-Abbas. They were two Palestinian martyrs whose lives were profoundly shaped by the conflict. It is the story of an endless struggle, filled with pain and sorrow, of two human beings who devoted their lives to the Palestinian cause. This struggle was not merely a political one for them, but also personal in their attempt to lead a normal life of dignity and comfort. In her book, Reem, tries to put the deeds of her husband, a military commander and the Palestinian general responsible for the famous Achille Lauro catastrophe, in a personal, historical, political and human perspective. She vividly explains what went wrong in the famous operation, whose original goal was very different from what it actually produced.

She tells us how her husband, a loving father of five, was condemned thereafter as a terrorist. Her book demonstrates how they tried to lead normal lives from hereafter, always struggling to return to their native Palestine. Reem takes us on a tour of her memories, which run parallel to millions of other Palestinians who suffered from occupation, war, and displacement. She paints a vivid picture of how horrible and terrifying life can be not only as an activist but also as a mother living one war after another, in Lebanon, Iraq, and Gaza.

This is a story of human struggle against manipulation and suppression, where two people seek to remind the world of the plight of the Palestinians, at a time when that struggle seems all but forgotten by dispute, corruption, and negligence. This book is a precious work first and foremost because it contextualizes episodes of history rarely spoken of in mainstream media and exposes our world today, where information is never revealed without an ulterior motive, modified according to political agendas and national interests. Finally, after the dolorous death of her husband while in custody at a US jail in Iraq, Reem calls for peace: a general and universal peace for all people, Israelis and Palestinians alike, so that no one must live in fear of losing their loved ones.

IMPRESSIVE STORY

I finished reading "Curse of the Achille Lauro" and was impressed by the story Reem al-Nimer had to tell. The author is the widow of Abu al-Abbas, the former right hand man of Yasser Arafat who was one of the most dedicated advocates for reclaiming the Palestinian homeland. Violent acts against Israel were justified in the name of justice. Yet, as the lives of these two freedom fighters (aka, terrorists) evolved, it became clear that their fight was futile. In the end both al-Abbas and al-Nimer come to the realization that their objective of reclaiming a homeland could be achieved only by Palestinians and Jews agreeing to live peacefully together. This idea is slowly taking hold with people on both sides.

The book also sheds light on the history and convoluted politics of the region in ways no other book has been able to do so well. I hope it becomes a national, no, international, best seller.

It is an honest and self-critical account that blends the struggles of a woman to be a mother and wife as well as a combatant in the Palestinian struggle. And most of all, it works convincingly toward the only approach that brings hope of peace to both peoples: the willingness to live together on the basis of equality and respect for the dignity of the other. An admirable attempt to transcend conventional wisdom on the Palestine/Israel conflict at a time when many have reached the conclusion that there is no solution.

This book excites me! I've read it three times and I still love it! Nick William's book The Business You Were Born to Create wakes up the entrepreneurial senses and gets your creative juices flowing. I find this book so timely, when everyone in the world is in survival mode and most people are feeling like they can't rely on the old crutch of corporate America to provide for them anymore.
It seems like everyone I talk to today is rethinking how they work and how they offer their talents to the world. Most people I know are consultants in various fields or have entrepreneurial businesses as a result of being laid off, divorced, or having doors slammed in their faces because they're over the age of 40. People are at their breaking point. They can't find the energy to deal with the online job boards anymore and apply for job after job and have their resume go down a black hole yet again. The thought of going on another interview where the company doesn't even have the courtesy afterwards to send you a `No Thank You' letter or email is enough to drive them to...no, not drink--start their own business!

How many times have you had an idea and pushed it aside saying, "I can't do it. I need the money from a full time job." Or, "No one will buy what I make. How could I ever attract customers? I'll be a failure in public everyone will talk about me."

Nick says that the world is waiting for your talents! He says, "Your calling and your gifts are community property: What you love doing will be a blessing to someone. You are a unique part of creation and have been imagined and created for a particular purpose--to inhabit a special corner in creation that is completely yours. No one else had the special combination of insights, experience, and understanding that you do. When you show up authentically, you will be the answer to somebody's prayers."

In his book, Nick shares his personal stories about being self employed and those of his clients to let you know that you're not alone in your fears and manifesting your dream business. He wants you to learn from his experience. He presents practical ways of putting yourself out there sprinkled with his special brand of inspirational guidance. Nick is a student of A Course in Miracles and uses that background to help you bridge your fear of the new world of self employment.

The book is set up into eight sections. I love every section but if you force me to pick favorites, I love Section 3, called Being An Artist and Creating Your Own Brand. Nick wants you to start thinking of yourself as the supplier of your own products and services. I love where he gives you twenty examples of what being a worker vs an entrepreneur looks like:

* #3 Workers tend to do work that is created by others, whilst artists [entrepreneurs] create their own work.

* #15 Workers are encouraged to fit in, whilst artists [entrepreneurs] are comfortable standing out, being seen and becoming known for their work.

* #17 Artists [entrepreneurs] love evolving and improving on what they do. Conventional work is often about doing the same stuff over and over again.

I also like Section 4 called Being a Pro in Your Work and Business where Nick talks about taking baby steps to get your business going. "You don't take baby steps for the distance they cover, but to put yourself in the receivership of life's magic. As you take baby steps, the Universe gets behind you."

I know exactly what he's talking about. When I started to write my novel, people just started showing up in my life to help me get to the finish line.

There's a section where he talks about people who have shadow careers that really stuck with me. In Out of the Shadows and Into Your Brilliance, Nick says a shadow career is where "you support the talents of others, rather than acknowledging and developing your own talent."
I know in my own life, I love books and supporting authors in the spiritual metaphysical space. Last year, my friends pushed me into the Next Top Spiritual Author contest. They kept yelling, "Come on Robin, this is your chance. Write something for the contest!"

I always thought that if a book was inside me, it would scream to come out. But, I was wrong. Just before the deadline, I was washing dishes in the kitchen and the whisper of a love story came to mind. I mapped it out in outline form and the love story came to life! Who would have thought that I would write a love story when all I read is non-fiction?? The book is completed in draft and being edited now. For me, coming out of the shadows is very freeing.

It took me way too long to write this review, probably because I was too busy dreaming about my own business inspired by Nick's great book! Get inspired and start your own business.
