Jesse Liberty is a Senior Program Manager at Microsoft in the Silverlight Development Division. His business card reads "Silverlight Geek," and he is responsible for fostering a Silverlight Developer community, primarily through Silverlight.net.

Jesse is the author of numerous books, including O'Reilly Media's Programming Silverlight 2 and the perennial best-seller Programming C# 3.0. Jesse has two decades experience as a developer, author and consultant and has been a Distinguished Software Engineer at AT&T; Software Architect for PBS/Learning Link; and Vice President at Citibank.

Alex Horovitz is Sr. Director of Enterprise Architecture & Standards at K12, Inc. where he develops enterprise applications leveraging the Model-View-Controller design pattern and re-usable Frameworks. During the 1990s he worked at both NeXT Computer and later at Apple.

Too much of the wrong things, not enough of the right ones

I have about 5 years of .NET programming experience, limited to .NET 1.1 and 2.0. I bought this book thinking it would be a good "quick hit" to learn, in overview form, about all the new technologies introduced in the two latest revs of .NET; not looking for in-depth coverage of any one subject, just enough to give me my bearings and get me started.

One thing that emerges clearly from reading the book is, this was in fact the authors' intent. In the very first chapter, it says "Our goal is to show you the 25% that you will use 85% of the time... this may well be the only book you need to consult about those parts of .NET that are not central to your business."

And indeed, the first chapter or two do provide a good description of the .NET 3.5 landscape: basically, there are a specific set of about 10 technologies that make up the bulk of what's new: XAML (a new form of UI markup that underlies WPF and Silverlight), Microsoft's take on AJAX, LINQ, WCF, Workflow Foundation and Cardspace.

From there, the book moves into a more specific treatment of each technology, and this is where it really wanders off into the woods, never to return. There is one principal reason for this: using examples the wrong way. Example is the book's central, if not only, teaching method, to the exclusion of necessary conceptual introduction, background, advance organization, and (often) even explanation of the examples themselves.

For instance, let's consider one major new concept-- the "lambda expression" from the chapter on LINQ. The example is shown ("customer => customer.FirstName == 'Donna'"), and then here is the explanation, in its entirety: "The lefthand operand, 'customer', is the input parameter, and the righthand operand is the lambda expression. In this case, it checks whether the customer's FirstName is 'Donna'."

I had to go on-line to learn that a lambda expression is a new, compact way of creating a delegate for an anonymous method, and that these delegates are a major element in the LINQ extension methods, whose parameters generally take the form of "Func(T, TResult)". (I also learned the meaning of "delegate", "anonymous method", and "Func(T, TResult)" from material on-line; to its credit, the book did go into some detail on what "extension methods" are.)

This mode of presentation was very typical-- leading off with an illustration in a vacuum, then following up with an insultingly oversimplified explanation. The section on AJAX was probably the worst.

As for an treatment of anything NOT specifically called for in the examples, forget it. I think the authors must be assuming that, in each case, their example (usually a two-screen application) will actually represent a direct analog to 85% of all usage for the new concept, and that nothing further is needed. Speaking for myself personally, I did not find that to be the case. I would have liked more explanation and less "Hello World".

As a very poorly fleshed-out framework, this book had some value. As I went through it, I at least got enough exposure to know which concepts I would need to understand in order to begin working with .NET 3.5. However, I had hoped for a book that would then go on to actually provide me with such an understanding. In that respect, this book was a major disappointment.

Excellent resource for .NET 3.5!

I just finished reading Programming .NET 3.5 from O'Reilly. The book, published in August, is an overview of the latest .NET Framework revision. You'll get an introduction to the topics that have been introduced along the way that include technology from .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0, and the latest version; .NET 3.5. Also included are libraries such as ASP.NET MVC and Silverlight.

You can easily pick up this book and enjoy the introductions to technologies such as Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, ASP.NET MVC, and Silverlight. Each of these topics are presented in a way that will be familiar to .NET developers. New developers, without experience in .NET, will be able to take a lot away from this book. It certainly will do more for the developer who already has a .NET background, no matter how brief it is.

That said, if you only pick up the book for the introduction to each technology, you'll be missing the best that this book has to offer. Unlike most technology books these days, this book explains the topics within the context of best practices and real world scenarios. For example, prior versions of ASP.NET did not promote decoupled architectures. In fact, it made it difficult to achieve them. With the technology available in .NET 3.5, modeling and implementing proper architectures is encouraged and facilitated by the framework. This book will show you how that works in .NET 3.5 and introduce you to the technologies at the same time.

I highly recommend this book. It will be on my desk for easy reference for my .NET projects in the future.

A tour of .NET 3.5

This book is very different than most of the book I have purchased on .NET because it covers XAML, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Silverlight, Ajax, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Workflow Foundation (WF), CardSpace, as well as the industry standard patterns Microsoft has incorporated in these technologies.

None of the technologies are gone into in great depth, and I thought I would be slamming them for that, but I can't because they tell us upfront they don't do that. I also can't do that because they did a great job of making this a roller coaster ride through the .NET 3.5 Framework. Meaning they point out some really cool stuff in one part of it, and then speed off to another part of it to show off the cool stuff there.

I would suggest you have somewhat of a background with .NET 3.5. You don't have to, but it helped me because I could easily place the book's topics into the proper context.

The authors do a good job introducing some of the key patterns found in the .NET Framework. It is the same as the rest of the book, they look at one cool view of the pattern and then speed off to the next one.

The code samples shown in the book are available on line, and they are well organized and very usable.

All in all I have enjoyed reading the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been trying to get a grip on all the different features in .NET 3.5. They will get a cool glimpse into each area.

This set of flash cards is perfect for studying for NCLEX. It has questions and rationales. It also comes with a sorting ring and the cards have punched holes so you can take a few to go without toting the entire box.

You know you are reading a good book, when halfway through; you call up your friends and tell them they HAVE to buy the book. That is what happened to me with this book!!! There were parts of it where I was laughing so hard I was almost in tears, and other parts that were so informational, that I actually learned a thing or two!

The characters in this book were written to where they all had completely different personalities. Sami's character shows the sense of innocence that a lot of women have these days but also has her strength that shows through at times. Crash and AJ seem like the typical football player bad-asses, but during the course of the book, you get to learn that there is more to them than meets the eye.

One thing that I completely enjoyed about this book was the fact that you were learning throughout the book. While the characters were going through the BDSM Boot Camp, you were as well. Cassidy didn't skip over details that are important such as the safety during certain scenes. There were also many different techniques that were
explained and demonstrated in this book.

The only thing that I did not like about this book was the "instant love" between Sami, AJ and Crash. Even though they had known each other for over a week, it still seemed as though it was all tied up too nicely at the end. I would have figured there would have been more arguments about the relationship than there were. They all seemed to take it rather in stride.

This is one book that I would recommend to anyone who is interested in the BDSM world. You are able to learn certain things about the lifestyle that might shock you, in a good way.

Love some football players

I won this book at RT along with the others in the series. I admit, I jumped right to this one because it had a football field in the background. I really enjoyed this book. It is the most informative BDSM book I've ever read and think a lot of BDSM writers would do good to read this before they begin their next BDSM romance novel. Many BDSM books leave me wanting to punch the Dom in the nose. I did not have this feeling at all with this book.

But I think I was most impressed with the story is it took several people who were curious/interested in BDSM and taught them what they needed to know and thereby doing the same thing for the reader. I also liked the fact that the author, through the characters, made it clear that BDSM is all of what you make of it. And unlike some popular books out there, it is not about coercion, but about mutual respect and trust.

A Shift in attitude about money

David Neagle uses his book as a medium to explain about the purpose of money and how it can be looked as a blessing rather than pieces of paper. He explains in his book that a shift in the mindset will help people to tap the theory of abundance when it comes to money. He also explains the effect of emotional triggers on the spending habits. He compares emotional triggers to mirages which emerge from the sense of lack everyone carries within themselves. The author mentions about how each person is gifted with a special talent and how shifting the mindset to believe if abundance would help use this talent at its best.

The author doesn't stop at just explaining about the emotional triggers and about the change in mentality that needs to be affected. The above is something that the author's own mentor told him many years ago, and it is as true in money matters as anything else. It is true in your mind itself, and through that it branches out to everything else. The old thinking was that as people age, their mental faculties simply reach a point where they naturally recede. Now we know that this is not so set in stone for most people. The brain, mind, and soul need exercise as much as any muscle in your body.

People are stuck in a financial mindset, from a young age, which is inhibiting them. We need to realize that we are mindlessly, yet obsessively, serving a belief system that gives us no benefit. Why? We owe these beliefs no form of loyalty in exchange for their hindering us. The author touches on this in his own life, as well as to our current economic situation. We trust, but fear corporations, and train the next generation to get in line for the same. This stops us both from creating our own wealth, and taking control of our own resources and talents - whatever they may be.

His outlook on lack and abundance reminds me of a segment on a magazine show I saw years ago. Heraldo Rivera was saying something to the effect that people incorrectly look at making money as taking a "piece of the pie." There is no particular pie we all have to fight over. Informative and ground-breaking

This is one of the first titles Dr. N.A.M. Eskin wrote. It challenges the very limits of biochemistry and allows the reader to grasp a better understanding of the inner working of basic compounds and chemicals. His only mistake with writing this book is not giving us an overview of Pindaree's diagram which is probably essential to have in order for a student of biochemistry to more easily understand. But he outdoes himself by listing all compound deliverances and structures. It's a technical look at life, but unlike other textbooks there is a soul to his writings. He is a genius in his time and this book goes on to prove that very fact.

Grade 5-9-First published in English in 1998 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Sachar's novel about delinquent boys at a bizarre prison camp has been translated into at least 16 languages and has received several major awards including the Newbery. The adolescent Stanley Yelnats is sent to a work camp in Texas after being falsely accused of a minor crime. The sole occupation of the inmates is to dig deep holes in the hard floor of a dried-up lakebed where Campamento Lago Verde (Camp Green Lake) is now situated. The Yelnats family history dates back to an ancestor who had once lived in the same area where the prison camp is now operated. This historical narrative is revealed in occasional chapters interspersed throughout the novel. As Stanley learns to survive in this harsh prison, he begins to realize that his fate is irrevocably tied to the past. The two plots intertwine as Stanley takes control of his own fate and in the process reverses the family curse. There are many YA themes in this well-crafted story: teenage alienation, bullying behavior, tough kids who turn out to be needy, arbitrary authority figures who wield their power despotically, coming of age, and more. About the Author
When Louis Sachar was going to school, his teachers always pronounced his name wrong. Now that he has become a popular author of children s books, teachers all over the country are pronouncing his name wrong. It should be pronounced Sacker, like someone who tackles quarterbacks or someone who stuffs potatoes into sacks.

Mr. Sachar received a B.A. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. His first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, was accepted for publication during his first year of law school. After receiving his law degree, he spent six years asking himself whether he wanted to be an author or a lawyer before deciding to write for children full-time. His books include Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger, There s a Boy in the Girls Bathroom, Wayside School is Falling Down, Dogs Don t Tell Jokes, and the Marvin Redpost series.

Romans chapter 8 tells us that we are to be led by the SPirit of God. Unfortunately most Christians haven't clue as to how to BE led. They don't know HOW to flow with the SPirit when He is moving. Get the book - Read it - and Learn! You won't be sorry.

This book (although our revelation comes from The Holy Spirit) has made a point that we need to discern what's going on in people and our Christian churches. We need a relationship with the Holy Spirit, not a religion. God hates religion. This book also makes a simple point: when we flow WITH the Holy Spirit (and not against) Him, He is FULLY able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we may ask or think. We are sons and daughters of The Most High (when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior) and we are vessels for His Glory , not our own.
