Witty and relatable

This is the first book I've read by this author but it won't be the last. The characters are easy to relate to and I loved the plot. The book is well written with plenty of laugh out loud moments. It follows Lyn, who has no choice but to come to terms with what's happened and make a fresh start. I thought I knew how it would end but I was wrong. Stevie kept me guessing right until the end. Highly recommended.

A fun romp!

I enjoyed this fun romp through menopause. It was well written and didn't have a rapid-fire pace. Lyn has lost her libido due to menopause, but her husband has needs that result in a baby with another woman. They divorce.

I loved how Lyn jumped in and began to construct a new life for herself while maintaining her sunny disposition. She buys a business, makes new friends, and meets a new man. He's terrific, but she still has feelings for her ex-husband.

In the end, I would have made different choices than those that Lyn made, but I respected her and liked her. I would love to be her friend.

An entertaining read

Lyn’s husband dumps her after 35 years of marriage and she starts her new life by moving and joining an online dating site. Of course, her ex gets wind of it and suddenly she’s looking attractive again. It’s a familiar scenario, cleverly told in the author’s unique style, which is witty and very entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great book for beginners

I am helping someone who is taking a course in school on VB 2012 and the course textbook is very bad. This book has helped him fill in those gaps very nicely. It is a good resource to get started writing applications for Windows and then move on to more challenging topics. This book presents the language in a way that is very easy to understand for beginners. Visual Basic in the NET platform has a reputation for being a "toy" language. It is not. The reasons for that are mostly historical (from the days of Visual Basic 6) and have no technical basis and are not grounded in fact. I have used C# extensively and I will say that VB in the NET platform is just as powerful. There is nothing you can do in C# that you cannot do in Visual Basic (and vice versa, of course). Visual Basic in the NET platform does not suffer from the same weaknesses as the older generation of Visual Basic languages. It is an extremely powerful language for programming applications for Windows (and web appliciations as well). If you are programming for the Windows platform, VB 2012 is a great language to work with. You will be up and running in no time and this book is a nice resource if you are just starting out. Highly recommended.

A very well written tutorial book

Ive have only had this book a couple of days (bought kindle version) and purchase it with the aim of learning Visual Basic to a standard that I can start to write some functional applications for my businesses. Im from an IT background but not programming or development, so have a basic understanding of programming anyway and have dabbled in the past so im not an absolute beginner but felt i needed to go through everything from the beginning with VB to ensure I will get things correct. So im already familiar with lots of concepts like variables, arrays, looping, operators, strings etc etc - all the basics, but I enjoyed going through the first chapters on these all the same as the writing style and the numerous "Try it Out" sections help keep things hands on which I find more interesting and by typing out the code on a regular basis it helps cement everything in my brain a little better and also get used to the visual studio environment. Im just 4 chapters in and feel quite at home in the VBS application.
The author manages to explain each concept very clearly and each section is structured in a way that it builds bit by bit of the previous examples very well. There are a couple of small errors in the book I have spotted so far but nothing major and nothing that has impeded my progress in anyway. The details level is perfect for me also as whilst it starts of with beginners concepts it doesnt shy away from visiting more technical areas which i find interesting/ For example the chapter on .NET touches on things that most beginners books wouldnt bother and there is also some foundation material binary , memory access etc - all stuff i already knew but I learnt a long time ago so a quick refresher did no harm and Im sure it is useful for those who have never learnt it in the past.

So whilst im only just 17% through Im giving this a good review already - i will probably update my review when I have been through the book to add more detail - but so far very good and recommended.

Perfect book for starting out with Visual Basic

This is required reading for a programming course I am taking. I've never looked at any Visual Basic books before, but I have done work with Java and HTML 5. I am still very much the beginner who has always been interested in programming, but found it a little scary. This book has made learning a programming language seem easier than any other I have seen, I keep asking myself if that's all there is too it. You're given examples of programming code to type which illustrate the concept the book is trying to teach. What the code is going to do is stated, then the code is given, each part of the code includes comments which explain what the section you are typing is going to do, last there is a subheading which explains why it works and is more detailed on exactly why the code typed does what is suppose to do.

It isn't a book for someone who is already is proficient in Visual Basic 2012 and is looking for long lists of coding. It is a book for someone who wants to learn Visual Basic for the first time.

I also enjoy the author's sense of humor. At one point in the beginning he talks about typing the coding in an application such as notepad instead of using the free Microsoft download of Visual Studio Express. He compares in to pounding a nail in using your shoe instead of a hammer. As someone who has used many objects other than a hammer to pound nails, I particularly appreciate the illustration and caused me to rethink my intention of using notepad. I do digress, but it's the first time I've found humor in any of the programming books that I've read.

Anyway highly recommended for anyone looking to learn Visual Basic 2012 for the first time.

Baron (linguistics, American Univ.) explores how children learn to speak from birth to age six. To explain the wide variations and individual differences in "cracking the language code," Baron uses three composite children who represent three different types of language learners. Through these examples, readers can follow the intricacies of the learning process without getting bogged down in technical jargon. The book is divided into seven major chapters, each representing a stage in language development from the idea of language to first words, a grammar, and eventually sophisticated conversation. At the end of each chapter, Baron suggests techniques that parents can use to promote language development and addresses areas of concern. This good, basic introduction to language learning is appropriate for educators (particularly preschool educators) and parents. Some 30 pages of bibliographical notes at the end attest to its scholarly foundation and provide the interested reader with ideas for further research.

Naomi S. Baron is Professor of Linguistics and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at The American University in Washington, D.C. A Guggenheim fellow, she is the author of four previous books about language and has taught at Brown University, Emory University, and Southwestern University. Growing Up With Language is Naomi Baron's fifth book about language. Baron writes this book for "parents, medical practitioners, educators and students." Since her graduate work, Baron has tried to reconcile the gap between studying in academia and practice and research with real children. Three questions remained unanswered. The first "How do you teach language?" The third and most difficult , "How do children crack the language code?" Any new parent or parent to be who has read Infants and Mothers by T. Berry Brazelton, will feel comfortable with the format of this book. Brazelton describes the development of three babies that he calls "Quiet," "Active," and "Average." Baron also chooses three styles of language learners that she identifies as, Sara, Ryan, and Alex. Throughout the book Baron includes a myriad of anecdotes to illustrate each language learning milestone for each of her three learners. When reading the book from cover to cover, you will discover that information is often repeated. Some readers will read specific chapters dealing with grammar, or baby talk, and will find the repetition of information helpful. Others will find it redundant. Each chapter concludes with an "Ideas and Alerts" section. These sections and the concluding Notes section are invaluable. Baron also chooses three "normal" children. In Chapter One, Baron introduces her three subjects and gives an outline for the remaining chapters. Baron identifies seven phases of language development and four themes. The first theme involves the "Conversational Imperative." The imperative compels people to talk to babies, pets, and stuffed animals. Theme II is the "Phantom Normal." All parents are yearning to know that their child is "normal." Theme III is "Language Orienteering," this is Baron's term for how children learn language. "Language Saturation," is how language learning is measured. Language is a social activity. Parents and children engage in a "duet" of conversation. Chapter Two illustrates the conversational relationships of the three children and their families. Baron discusses the common features of babytalk and the development of language from birth to the emergence words. Biology impacts language development. Changes take place with the palate, tongue and larynx that allow an infant to first use his mouth for nourishment and later for communication. Short hand allowed secretaries to conserve time and space without losing content. Children create their own spoken shorthand when communicating with others. Young children exploit their expressive vocabulary confident that they have maintained meaning, even when adults need an interpreter. Chapter Three, "Language on a Shoestring," illustrates through a variety of anecdotes how children attempt to communicate using their limited language resources. Adult language and phonology requires young linguists to perform tongue calisthenics. Because of the difficulty of sequencing certain sounds, water becomes "wawa" and Thank you becomes "Tanku." Depending upon the volume of language modeled for children, each child develops a language learning strategy reflecting his language environment. Katherine Nelson named the early word users as "referential." Referential children use recognizable words at 9-10 months. Referential children begin using grammar and creating their own word combinations using analysis of modeled parental language. "Expressive" children will have their first words appear at 12- 14 months. Their language is "echo" the speech of adults, and are less likely to take risks. Baron states that many children fall between these two groups. The two learning styles mirror the parental learning styles. Referential parents ask many questions and talk about objects in the environment. Expressive parents use language related to social activities and conversation. Preschoolers establish a vocabulary, then they must work and mold their grammar. Most adults do not remember their children's colloquialisms, however Chapter Four, gives examples that will be familiar to most parents. Using words analogies children create new words of phrases as needed. Use of analogy caused Alex to respond." I changed up my mind." Alex had heard response, "I made up my mind," numerous times. It seemed a logical response to also "change up" your mind. "Bags on the Banks," is the title of Chapter Five. The subtitle is "Orienteering in Meaning, Sound and Conversation." What are "bags on the banks?" To any preschooler, they the bags that are often put on parking meters, when they are not in use. To a preschooler who does not know the term "parking meter," bags on the banks is a logical way to express meaning. As children become "saturated" with language, they begin to create humor, and see relationships between events. Children begin to have "language awareness," and are able to manipulate the language, sometime creating unexpected humor. Once you understand the concept of a sunset, would a rainset, or snowset seem impossible? Chapter Six, demonstrates a child's ability to manipulate language. Chapter Seven, focuses on emerging literacy. Baron discusses the impact that Sesame Street has had on many modern preschool children. While singing the praises of Sesame Street, she does not consider the television as a substitute for parental communication. Susan Foster-Cohen, author of An Introduction to Child Language Development, suggests that there are two responses to language research. One is that of an observational response and the other a logical response. Cohen considers Baron to be the former and herself the latter. Foster-Cohen suggests that Baron's book is for people" with little or no familiarity with linguistics." Growing up with Language, will give parents and teachers of young children an insight into how they develop language, and offer a variety of suggestions to aid in this process. It would be a useful resource for professionals who are communicating with parents about language development. A reader of Growing Up With Language will understand the meaning of morphology, pitch, intonation, and the importance of glides and liquids. Anecdotes will bring back memories or perhaps provide a few chuckles. The resources and notes listed give ample suggestions for continued study. It is a reader friendly book, that is not intended to offer a course in linguistics.

Not too technical and very informative

Teaching English to non-native speakers (of English) led me to an interest in the field of language acquisition more than 20 years ago. The author invents composite families in order to highlight the various influences in a child's stages of language acquisition. The vignettes of dialogue offer an easy read for the lay audience as well as students of linguistics/speech development. I have passed this book on to young parents who can use it as a reference to assuage any anxiety they might have regarding their child's language development.

About the Author

Deborah R. Harden is a Professor in the Department of Geology at San Jose State University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in California geology and Earth-surface processes. Her particular interests are in landscape-forming processes, rivers, the effects of faults on streams, human impacts on watersheds, and California geology.

Before coming to San Jose State University, Dr. Harden worked as a geologist for a private engineering consulting firm and as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University, all in geology.

Dr. Harden has had the privilege and opportunity of visiting and studying geology and landscapes in many parts of the world, both professionally and with her family.

The ONLY up-to-date textbook on California geology

Deborah Hardin's textbook on California geology is superior to all previous texts inasmuch as she is the first to utilize the theory of plate tectonics to provide a unified framework for her overall exposition. Instead of being bombarded with an encyclopedic but chaotic assemblage of rock types and unconnected microprocesses, the reader is treated to a consistent and comprehensive picture of how California came to be that hangs together remarkably well.
Harden utilized the recent research of countless other geologists to put together this book, and her hard work has paid off. She includes several chapters that provide a conceptual overview of geologic principles, then goes on in successive sections to describe how various forces and processes related ultimately to plate tectonics have been responsible for the evolution of various distinctive landforms and geomorphic regions of California. She also includes a final chapter that is a stand-alone summary version of the "geological history of California." Throughout the book, she makes clear again and again how a clear understanding of the various ways that tectonic plates can interact is absolutely fundamental to understanding how California has come into existence over the past several hundred million years. It's a fascinating story, and Harden's text will help anyone willing to read carefully and study a bit to learn the basics of California geology.
As an added bonus, Harden has included several sections that are linked to present-day environmental hazards, most notably those related to the constant threat of earthquakes in the Golden State. Such information is, of course linked directly to the geology of the state that she has described and explained so well.
The illustrations and diagrams re not terribly elaborate, but they are helpful and reasonably plentiful. Also included are some small-sized versions of the standard California geology and fault maps.
The main drawback to this publication is its astronomical price. This is hardly Harden's fault, however, as high prices seem to be the unfortunate standard for college textbooks these days.

Not bad. Needs some polishing.

I bought this textbook to study for the California section of the PG exam. It definitely helped. I enjoyed the final section that presented concepts from previous chapters in a grand-scheme California geologic history. It's not state-of-the-art research, but it's good enough to help wrap your head around the big picture without getting bogged down in too many details.

Several figures were pulled from other sources and didn't list acronyms or explain how they related to the subject. They looked good but didn't help understand the topic. I also felt like information about some topics was scattered throughout the book; so I really needed to read the whole thing to pull it all together in my mind.

I would recommend to anyone with an introductory geology education or a professional who needs to brush up on their regional geology.

Finally found a book explaining how my state was made. I've been looking in bookstores for several years with no success, so I turned to the internet, found this title right away. It's pricey, as are all textbooks, but it answers all my questions (at least, what science has found, so far). It's also a perfect fit with my California geography textbook, approaching each area through the same province names, descriptions. Now I have both a physical and geographical understanding of California. Also, I was amazed that Amazon sent it out "regular" delivery and it arrived within two days of my ordering it!
