My entire journey into the cosmetic industry started with Melt and Pour Soap shortly after I discovered aromatherapy. The roots of our business, Essential Wholesale, all started in December of 1998. Over the years we moved from our home kitchenette to a 600 square foot space, to a 2500 square foot building, to a 10,000 square foot space in a bigger building, and from there we have expanded into 30,000 square feet of that same building. In 2011 our business will be moving to an even larger 58,000 square foot building. As our business expanded we began to focus on natural cosmetics and personal care products. However, I never lost my curiosity and fascination with Melt and Pour Soap. Our relationship with Melt and Pour Soap changed over the years. At first we sold retail customized Melt and Pour Soaps. We then bought and sold the company Critter Soaps. Later we sold thousands of pounds worth of wholesale Melt and Pour Soap base and eventually discontinued selling Melt and Pour Soap because the price kept rising. At the time Melt and Pour Soap was the only cosmetic base we sold that we didn't manufacture ourselves. It simply didn't make sense to wholesale someone else's base when our business model had changed to selling only the bases we manufactured ourselves. It was at this point in our business that I decided it was time to formulate our own Melt and Pour Soap ourselves. It didn't take long to have working formulas, but at that moment we were using up every inch of space in our 30,000 square foot building. We were bursting at the seams and couldn't accommodate the manufacturing and cooling of the Melt and Pour Soap Base in bulk. Our space was so tight we couldn't possibly cool an 8,000 lb batch of Melt and Pour Soap base into multiple 1 lb, 20 lb and 40 lb blocks to sell in bulk. But we got continued requests to manufacture and sell Melt and Pour Soap base. My solution is this book. About the Author
Kayla is a Certified, ARC Registered Aromatherapist and the co-Founder and Chief Formulator for Essential Wholesale and its lab division Essential Labs. Wife and mother of three, she runs her company along with her husband Dennis. In 1998, Kayla started creating products in her kitchen using essential oils. They turned the profit from their first batch of products into more supplies, have repeated the process over and over again to remain a debt free company. In 2000 they started an all natural aromatherapy based Home Party Plan. In 2002, they changed their business plan and became the distribution and manufacturing company, Essential Wholesale. This was followed by the addition of Essential Labs in 2005. Not at all real soap.

I am a soap-maker who already figured out successful formulations for making melt and pour soap base from oils, lye and solvents. I thought I would read this to further my existing knowledge and I am disappointed. It's not real soap at all. Just the fact that it's called "Soap Base" would imply that there will be actual soap making going on and that is not the case here. My own formulations were a great alternative to those bases loaded with detergents in the stores or available from websites. I was extremely disappointed to find that these recipes are all detergent based bars using a lot of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and other detergent and almost or ZERO OILS. If you love using sulfates and parabens and other carcinogenic ingredients, then by all means, go ahead and purchase this. However, if you want to learn to make melt & pour from scratch using more natural methods, just go to youtube and search for "how to make melt and pour soap from scratch". I have also formulated suspension bases and clear bases which will eventually all be published for free and not using parabens and sulfates. As another reviewer mentioned, there are no images in this book. There is no suspension base listed. A few very similar clear base recipes are listed such as clear, white, high suds but I will not try any of them because I refuse to use SLS (makes my skin dry, cracked & rash) and do not want to manufacture something that will give me cancer. Not a healthy choice. Every recipe contains sodium laureth sulfate. I do not like this book at all. However, you might like it if you want to learn how to make Melt & Pour "Detergent Base" which would be the more appropriate name for this book.
There is one experimental more natural soap base (natural melt n pour soap base in progress formula which the author says she has "hit or miss" success with) but it uses ethanol which will quickly evaporate out of the soap base when you remelt it. I know this from experience. Ethanol based glycerin soap will give you a tranparent meltable soap but it will only be good for one melting or maybe two if you are lucky before it loses it's melting properties and gets goopy like HP soap. If you want to make transparent ethanol based soap, Catherine Failor's book on Transparent soap making is a good read and I liked it very much.
I had to come back to edit this review. There is a lot of other general soap-making stuff that is not really relevant to making MP soap base but rather soaping in general so I hadn't read through it all and then stumbled on some math errors. It's come to my attention that 39% in on the kindle version in the section called "Scenting your soap" there is a math error that could result in a bar of product that is not skin safe. While it's probably a typo, or rather 3 typos to be exact, please do not follow the directions for measuring the scenting oils. If you follow the directions for scenting this soap at 1% you will actually be scenting at 10%, 2% will be 20% and following the directions for scenting at 3% will actually be 30%. I think the book needs a good proof-read. Please ph test anything you make from this book also to be sure all formulations are skin-safe. (I won't be making them so I did not check the Ph of any formulations.)

Buyer beware- Chemical cocktails

Buyer beware. This book doesn’t contain any natural/organic recipes. If you don’t care what you put on your skin or your childrens…..go for it!
I don't care for the author's attitude about any potential toxicity of the ingredients used in the recipes. She down plays the importance of the MSDS. I work in a lab so I know what I'm talking about.

My allergist told me to stay away from Laureth Sulfate and its cousins, as well as anything with parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl or ethyl compounds).

Don't buy this book.

This book is jam packed with recipes that contain chemicals. I disagree with the author's opinion that melt & pour can't be made without these fake ingredients. I've made a very successful base with only oils, water, lye and glycerin. What do you think people did before these chemicals were around? The shortcuts don't justify the outcome. How many times does melt & pour have to be remelted? Do a Google search. There's a blog as well as a YouTube video that shows how to do it.
