Good for 2 groups of readers.

This book is suitable for 2 sets of audiences:
a) Those without prior knowledge of Probability and Statistics, but with a strong maths background;
b) Those who already have a reasonable knowledge in Probability and Statistics (like myself, I hope), who want a more technical cut to their knowledge. After all, probability and statistics should involve heavy use of matehematics at higher level.
On the other hand, if your maths background is not so strong, I would suggest a less technical book first, such as Mood, Graybill, Boes, which is easier to follow. Then once your basic Probability and Statistics knowledge is reasonable, you can move on to Rohatgi, which will give you a more technical cut.

Solid introduction to probability and statistics

I used this book in one of my advanced probability courses, and it helped me to improve my understanding of the theory behind probability. It definitely requires a background in probability and as the author says it's not a "cookbook", but a mathematics text.

The authors develop the theory based on Kolmogorov axioms which solidly founds probability upon measure theory. All the concepts, limit theorems and statistical tests are introduced with mathematical rigor. I'm giving this book 4 stars cause sometimes, the text gets extremely dense and technical. Some intuitive explanations would be helpful.

Though, this is the right book for the mathematicians, industrial engineers and computer scientists wishing to have a strong background in probability and statistics. But, beware: not suitable for the novice in undergrad.

I am a graduate student studying statistics and this is our departmental text for statistical theory. The authors of this text remind me of the type of teachers who come into class and write a lot of math on the board with little explanation. What explanation is given is of little help and nearly impossible to navigate. Open up to a random page and you won't know what section or chapter you are in because the publishers failed to include these as headings. Many of the exercises at the end of each section have incredibly difficult solutions requiring theorems included nowhere in the book or a great deal of algebraic manipulation and calculus and very little statistical ability.

I realize that this text was intended to be highly mathematical, but if you are interested in a graduate level text that explains statistical theory 100x better than this text, see Casella and Berger's. The only reason my department uses this text instead is because a professor is buddies with the author.

My classmates and I complain about this text constantly. It is truly a nightmare.

About the Author
Frank R. Giordano began his teaching career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he served for 21 years, including seven years as professor and head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He currently is a Professor of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. He has served as project director for several major National Science Foundation grants devoted to modeling, including one to initiate a high school modeling contest (the HiMCM). For the past 15 years, he has served as the director of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Frank R. Giordano began his teaching career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he served for 21 years, including seven years as professor and head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He currently is a Professor of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. William P. Fox is a professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Previously; he was an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of operations research while serving in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA) for more than 12 years. He also served as the Chair of Mathematics at Francis Marion University for eight years before coming to the Naval Postgraduate School. Dr. Fox has taught a variety of mathematics courses in his career, and his areas of interest include mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, and simulations. He holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. from Clemson University.

Steven B. Horton is professor of operations research and acting deputy head in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point. He has taught a variety of mathematics courses at West Point since joining the faculty in 1991. Dr. Horton holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, master's degrees from Georgia Tech and the National Defense University, and a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech.

Maurice D. Weir is professor emeritus at the Naval Postgraduate School. He began his teaching career at Whitman College, and then in 1969 became a professor of mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he also served as associate provost for instruction. Dr. Weir's research and teaching interests include combat systems modeling and simulation, mathematics education, mathematical modeling, and differential equations. Professor Weir won the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the United States Military Academy in 1986 and the Schieffelin Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1983. Professor Weir retired from teaching in 1999 but is still actively engaged in writing mathematics textbooks. He received his M.S. and D.A. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon.

A change for the better.

I do truly believe in Feng Shui. I believe you need harmony for happiness, wealth, and to prosper. I never knew how to start though. This book has really gave me some great ideas about how to get started getting my life on the right track by using feng shui. I already started trying to rearrange my living room the get a positive flow. It will take time and practice but if you use the advice in this book you will be able to master feng shui and bring some peace and harmony into your life. I believe it also brings beauty and light into your life also. I received this book at a discount for an honest review. I recommend it for anyone needing a change for the better in there life.

Not worth the effort

Am I missing something?!? I see many great reviews for this book and it's the most useless Feng Shui book I've ever read. And I could only manage half way through! Anyone who has studied Feng Shui for more than a few years will not be impressed. If you're interested in learning Eight Directions School (which this is) there are much better volumes to choose.
My copy was so badly written, obviously it was never proofed before printing. And where are the credentials? Anyone who thinks they're expert enough to write a book should be willing to put in some background information. Yes, there are some basic tips (some of which are incorrect) but there's not enough detailed info. Why tell the reader they need to know their personal element, auspicious directions and kua number and then not tell them how to do that? At least add a birthdate chart in the appendix so the reader doesn't have to search out additional sources.
This is the only item I've ever had to return to Amazon. There are over fifty Feng Shui volumes on my bookshelf,and I didn't care to add this one to the collection. Again, if you're just investigating Feng Shui, this may be a valid purchase, but not really worth the money!!!

One of the largely forgotten great novels

George Sand's Indiana dramatizes and explores a wide variety of concerns in the nineteenth century with a brilliance one rarely finds in a first novel: Arranged marriages, what it means to be a Creole, colonialism and plantation profiteering, slavery, the beginnings of the deterioration of Old Europe, and the rise of the businessman. In terms of narrative style, this may be one of the most unique novels I have read. The use of narrator to facilitate multiple endings is ingenious as well as baffling. Once you get to the end and discover who the narrator is or could be, you will likely want to re-read the novel, and voila! It's like experiencing the novel for the first time. It is a very rare talent indeed to create one novel for a first reading and a second novel for a second reading. It's a mystery to me how Sand has lost much of her notoriety. This novel is far superior than most you will find anywhere and in any language.

An extraordinary first novel

I recently read a biography of George Sand and it stimulated an interest in reading some of her novels. It wasn't easy to find some, but I did manage to buy 'Indiana' and 'Mauprat' through a second-hand dealer. 'Indiana' is an interesting story of relationships especially between husbands and wives, men and women, nobility and commoners, family and strangers. The central marraige is uncharacteristic of modern Western society in that an older wealthy man has married a young woman for the status of it - he is no more than her friend, and often not even that. But there are many ways in which marraiges can fail either the woman or the man in modern Western society and consequently, for me, the symptoms of what goes on in this novel - even if not the causes - are current in modern society.
Sand's story is engaging and generally well paced. It does seem a bit like a soap opera sometimes. It also rushes to an unsatisfactory ending - a bit like the end of 'Well of Loneliness', which appalled me. But then Sand has a surprise for me - although I have a sneaking feeling that it might be an afterthought, a rewrite. What is distinctive about Sand's writing is her ability to create a visionary scene - like the one where Raymon rails against the picture of Indiana's cousin Ralph hanging in Indiana's bedroom (Raymon is there with his lover of the time - Indiana's serving girl Noun). And then there is the extraordinary scene where Indiana almost drowns in the river only to be rescued by Ralph - we see the world transform itself from Indiana's perspective in the most unsettling way.
I enjoyed this novel immensely and look forward to reading more of Sand's writing.

A good introduction to General Relativity

What is unique in this book is that it has the G�del cosmological solution to

the general relativity equations. It has a good coverage of Weyl's gauge

equations as well and a discussion of the

topological implications of black holes.

The mathematics is well done and relatively easy to follow.

This text is a classic text on gravity theory.

My Favorite Book on General Relativity

This second edition of the Adler, Bazin and Schiffer book is nothing short of miraculous. I have read it off and on for 25 years, and I always manage to learn something new from it. Although it cannot compete with the more recent texts on post-Newtonian mechanics, everything is here for the advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate student: tensor calculus; Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries; tensor applications in electrodynamics; variational methods; Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes; Killing vectors; and much, much more. An entire chapter is devoted to Weyl's gauge-invariant theory and Wheeler's "already unified" field theory. If you have been completely turned off by Misner-Wheeler-Thorne's Gravitation book (along with its somewhat pretentious and totally confusing annotations and sidebar material), and yet you still want to learn a decent amount of general relativity, buy this book while copies are still available. I'm still hoping that a third edition (with a chapter on computer applications) will eventually hit the shelves.
